Using VoiceOver

VoiceOver is an accessibility feature available on your iOS device that provides TTS (text-to-speech). It can be used to read your books using the speech synthesis. TTS is available only for EPUB books (not PDF). If your EPUB is under the Adobe DRM, you must have the "Play permission" for VoiceOver to work. To verify this, you can open the Book Information dialog by tapping the "Info" button in the reader's toolbar, when the book is opened – it won't work from the library.

Step 1: Activating VoiceOver

  • Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver
  • Tap on the switch to activate VoiceOver.

Tips: To  switch VoiceOver on and off easily, from within the book:
  • Open the Settings app, and follow:
    • iOS 7: Settings > General > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut
    • iOS 6: Settings > General > Accessibility > Triple-click Home
  • Choose VoiceOver.
  • Then you just need to quickly press three times the Home button on your device to toggle VoiceOver in the book.

Step 2: How to use it in the book

  • A tap on a line of the book starts playback from the beginning to the end of the line.
  • If you "drag" along the page, you can listen to the lines while moving the finger.
  • Sliding two fingers up starts continuous playback from the top of the page.
  • Sliding two fingers down starts continuous playback from the selected line
  • Sliding three fingers to the left or right will turn the pages
  • Sliding one finger down or up will scroll the lines one by one.
    • Rotating 2 fingers allows you to choose which element you want to scroll by. Available choose are: characters, line or word.
  • Double-tap on the screen opens the menu.
  • A tap on an UI interactive element select it. And then, a double-tap anywhere on the screen executes the associated action.
